News -- March 9, 2006

NASA: Probe Finds Signs Of Water On Saturn's Moon - "The orbiting Cassini spacecraft has spotted liquid water spewing from geysers on one of Saturn's icy moons, raising the tantalizing possibility that the celestial object harbors life. ... There were erroneous reports online and elsewhere Thursday that NASA was going to report finding life on another planet or somewhere else in the solar system, according to Florida Today reporter John Kelly. "That's not the case," Kelly said in an Internet posting. "It appears some who obtained NASA's news release did not fully understand what they were reading.""

Iran's Deadly EMP Weapon Latest Neo-Con War Fraud - "From the same snake oil salesmen that brought you 45 minute attack claims, dodgy dossiers and weapons bunkers that were bakeries, comes the shocking new threat that could knock America back into the stone age, Iran's deadly EMP weapons. Fox, CBN News, World Net Daily and others are running for the hills Y2K style in their madcap efforts to warn the American people that we must strike Iran before they unleash the apocalyptic fury of EMP."

Rice: Iran may pose greatest challenge to US - ""We may face no greater challenge from a single country than from Iran, whose policies are directed at developing a Middle East that would be 180 degrees different than the Middle East we would like to see developed," Rice said at a congressional hearing." -- "You better watch out, 'cause I'm a war machine." ~ KISS

At last, the warmongers are prepared to face the facts and admit they were wrong - "It has taken more than three years, tens of thousands of Iraqi and American lives, and $200bn (£115bn) of treasure - all to achieve a chaos verging on open civil war. But, finally, the neo-conservatives who sold the United States on this disastrous war are starting to utter three small words. We were wrong."

Why Iran? - "Whether planning for an attack is in an advanced stage, or whether reports of an imminent assault are a ruse to pressure Iran, is unclear. Whatever the case, there’s no mistaking the reality that the Iranian president is being elevated to the position of international enemy #1, in much the same way Saddam Hussein was in the run-up to the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq."

They Came For the Chicken Farmer - " This has been our nightmare since the Bush administration began stashing prisoners it did not want to account for in Guantánamo Bay: An ordinary man with a name something like a Taliban bigwig's is swept up in the dragnet and imprisoned without any hope of proving his innocence. A case of mistaken identity's turning an innocent person into a prisoner-for-life was supposed to be impossible. President Bush told Americans to trust in his judgment after he arrogated the right to arrest anyone, anywhere in the world, and toss people into indefinite detention. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld infamously proclaimed that the men at Guantánamo Bay were "the worst of the worst." But it has long been evident that this was nonsense, and a lawsuit by The Associated Press has now demonstrated the truth in shameful detail. The suit compelled the release of records from hearings for some of the 760 or so men who have been imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay. (About 490 are still there.) Far too many show no signs of being a threat to American national security. Some, it appears, did nothing at all. And they have no way to get a fair hearing because Gitmo was created outside the law.""

A Veteran’s Letter to the President “I Return Enclosed the Symbols of My Years of Service” - "Until your administration, I believed it was inconceivable that the United States would ever initiate an aggressive and preemptive war against a country that posed no threat to us. Until your administration, I thought it was impossible for our nation to take hundreds of persons into custody without provable charges of any kind, and to "disappear" them into holes like Gitmo, Abu Ghraib and Bagram. Until your administration, in my wildest legal fantasy I could not imagine a U.S. Attorney General seeking to justify torture or a President first stating his intent to veto an anti-torture law, and then adding a "signing statement" that he intends to ignore such law as he sees fit. I do not want these things done in my name."

The Most Powerful Weapon In The World - "Take a look around their website and witness sickening quote after quote explaining how their vision is to allow the total control of citizens by their government or their military, to keep it that way, and to facilitate conflicts with and the takeover of other countries and the execution of total control over their citizens. The idea put across by SCL is that if you can control the perceptions people have of reality, then you can control reality itself."

Why Data Mining Won't Stop Terror - "In the post-9/11 world, there's much focus on connecting the dots. Many believe data mining is the crystal ball that will enable us to uncover future terrorist plots. But even in the most wildly optimistic projections, data mining isn't tenable for that purpose. We're not trading privacy for security; we're giving up privacy and getting no security in return. ... The promise of data mining is compelling, and convinces many. But it's wrong. We're not going to find terrorist plots through systems like this, and we're going to waste valuable resources chasing down false alarms. To understand why, we have to look at the economics of the system."

Intellectual Terrorism - "The essence of intellectual terrorism is to: demonise the enemy, and concurrently silence them, usually it is a precursor to genocide or mass murder e.g. the Nazi’s in Germany . Dehumanising the enemy makes it easier to commit such acts, as one can wash the blood stained hands with previously issued excuses, but not the stains from a guilty mind. Apart from hurling abuse, intellectual terrorists also hide behind promoting ideals like, peace, human rights, freedom etc. In the name of peace they initiate war; they lecture about human rights while engaged in inhuman tortures; they crave for freedom by taking the freedom of others, by bombing them to incineration."

Abramoff Interview: Lobbyist Details Relationship With Bush, DeLay, Burns - "Vanity Fair is set to publish an in-depth interview with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Abramoff sheds new light on his close relationships with top conservatives, including some not typically associated with the Abramoff scandals like Ken Mehlman and Newt Gingrich. Some choice quotes:"

See Dick Loot - "Halliburton and its subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) have been making hay in the burning Iraqi sun for years now. It is, of course, no coincidence that the man sitting as vice president played a key role with his influence in obtaining the lion's share of contracts in Iraq for the company he was CEO of prior to his self-appointed position. Yet none of this is news. What is news, however, is that the ties that bind Cheney to Halliburton also link him to groups with even broader interests in the Middle East, which are causing civilians on the ground there, as well as in the US, to pay the price. "

Senate Panel Blocks Eavesdropping Probe - "The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence voted along party lines yesterday to reject a Democratic proposal to investigate the Bush administration's domestic surveillance program and instead approved establishing, with White House approval, a seven-member panel to oversee the effort."

Bush Orders DHS to Create Center for Faith-Based Aid - "President Bush ordered the Department of Homeland Security yesterday to create a center for faith-based and community initiatives within 45 days to eliminate regulatory, contracting and programmatic barriers to providing federal funds to religious groups to deliver social services, the White House announced last night."

Faith-based national security - "More proof that George Bush doesn't even care about about his "signature issue" of national security. It's all about funneling money to his cronies. The joke is on his jingoistic supporters, but as usual we all have to live with the consequences."

FREE SPEECH ON THE RUN IN THE WEST - "Much of Europe has painted itself into a corner on the censorship issue. What can Norway say to pro-censorship Muslims when it already has a hate speech law forbidding, among other things, "publicly stirring up one part of the population against another," or any utterance that "threatens, insults or subjects to hatred, persecution or contempt any person or group of persons because of their creed, race, color or national or ethnic origin ... or homosexual bent"? No insulting utterances at all? Since most strong opinions can be construed as insulting (hurting someone's feelings), no insults means no free speech. ... Many nations have set themselves up for Muslim complaints by adopting the unofficial slogan of the West's chattering classes: Multiculturalism trumps free speech."

Conservatives have more fun - "THIS MONTH the Pew Research Center released a poll that said Republicans are happier than Democrats. If you are thinking it's because we currently occupy the White House, you would be wrong. Republicans have been happier even when a Democrat was in the White House. Could it be that we conservatives have a more positive world view? How about a more positive national view? A more positive view of religion? A more positive view of our careers? A more positive view of the future?"

Be Happy Happy Happy All the Time - "What this woman is really saying is, "I've got my McMansion and my Escalade and my kids are in a private school, and America works for me." ... The combination of the "I've got mine, Jack" philosophy with the "my happiness is the only thing that matters, and to hell with everybody else" is how the George Bushes of the world gain power. ... America today isn't a case of happiness or depression. It's a matter of facing reality or living in a rose colored bubble where everything is fine. And when the jumbo jet crashes into the office tower, you wonder what the hell happened. Why do they hate us?"

Bird Flu Could Reach Americas in 6 Months - "The virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu could reach the Americas in six to 12 months or even sooner as infected wild birds migrate toward the Arctic and Alaska, the U.N. bird flu chief said."

Don't talk to invisible strangers - "The new wave of concern has led some parents to curtail their children's Internet use, and it has increased many young people's awareness of the potential for online stalking. But some Internet safety experts say that a fear of networking sites has grown disproportionately to actual demonstrated threats, and that there is an unjustified paranoia about the sites."

Rising Tide of Ocean Plagues - "Marine researchers are hesitant to say the world's oceans are sicker than usual. But they are raising the alarm that the ocean is changing -- possibly as a result of human interference -- and the evolving diseases are putting both sea animals and humans at risk."

Ice Thawing Earlier on Maine Lakes - "Ice on dozens of lakes in Maine and four other states is melting earlier in the year than in decades past, according to a new analysis."
