The Forged Origins of The New Testament

It has often been emphasised that Christianity is unlike any other religion, for it stands or falls by certain events which are alleged to have occurred during a short period of time some 20 centuries ago. Those stories are presented in the New Testament, and as new evidence is revealed it will become clear that they do not represent historical realities. The Church agrees, saying:"Our documentary sources of knowledge about the origins of Christianity and its earliest development are chiefly the New Testament Scriptures, the authenticity of which we must, to a great extent, take for granted."(Catholic Encyclopedia, Farley ed., vol. iii, p. 712)

Luis, this one's for you. ;-)

Hehe, this is a popular one.

What makes versions of this story so convincing is the way the Church Fathers are referenced, yielding credence to the argument presented. Of course, this falls apart if the original documents are actually studied (since they are always quoted out of context). Unfortunately, since this rarely happens, the story is deemed as tenable.

It'd be interesting to know where this "theory" originated and what agenda is being forwarded by its spread.

Coincidentally, I'm currently reading a book regarding the formation of the Jewish and Christian Canon. It's a compilation of essays written by folks of various backgrounds (Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, etc.) It's challenging, but so far is very interesting.
