Wolfram Alpha: Next major search breakthrough?

It follows the Google principle, with a simple input box, but takes a different approach to rendering search results. Nova Spivack, CEO of Radar Networks, which developed Twine, an ambitious "interest network" Web application based on semantic Web technologies, , said that Wolfram Alpha may be as "important for the Web (and the world) as Google, but for a different purpose."

I think the most telling statement by Spivack's peice was:

"Think about that for a minute. It computes the answers. Wolfram Alpha doesn't simply contain huge amounts of manually entered pairs of questions and answers, nor does it search for answers in a database of facts. Instead, it understands and then computes answers to certain kinds of questions."

If Wolfram's truly figured out a way to do this, even if his implementation (Alpha) is a complete dud, this still has the potential of being incredibly significant. I have a high opinion of Wolfram, so I'm really excited to see what he's come up with.
